after checking my own blog for updates more than a few times, i've realized that apparently no one is going to do it for me. so, hm. where to start? no sense in updates so just a few quick stories before i'm off to work.
i treated myself to some chinese food on valentine's day. i headed to mok hwa chinese/korean restaurant near marshall street (across from samrat, the indian place). i was craving some general tso's tofu and found it on the menu outside. as it turns out a girl from my library systems and processes class is the daughter of the owners. after a complicated discussion about getting tofu rather than chicken, she decided to recommend the tofu and clams. after i explained that i don't eat meat, she suggested that they make it less spicy. next, she suggested the three beef special. i decided to send her away and spend some time with the menu on my own and found the general tso's tofu. i got it and enjoyed it more than a little. yum. highly recommended.
in other news, we had a great discussion about the purpose of libraries in the aforementioned class. the class seemed to be split between the 'give people what they want' bookstore model (reading as consumption) and the 'give people what they need' education model (reading as learning). i must admit i pretty strongly agree with the 'give 'em what they need' model where a library becomes a place facilitating education and housing works of actually literature rather than "junk food books." my only issue is how it's decided what books are considered educational or worthy of a spot on the shelf - and of course there has to be some of those "junk food books" on the shelf because we all need a mindless book from time to time.
a friend of mine made the analogy of a child eating twinkies all the time is most likely better off not eating and has no problem shoving good food (or in this case, good literature) down the throats of those children. chances are none of us will be able to have these kinds of profound effects on the libraries we end up in, but it's good to think about.
the weather in syrcause continues to be terrible. too much snow, far too much wind and way too much cold - but there was sun the other day so there is some home for a better season to come.
i was checking out the
paintings of former Weezer bassist, Mikey Welsh, the other day - they make me want to start painting again. unfortuantely, i think it will be a while before i have time for something like that.
well, now work calls (again). yipee.
