a story of library school, life in my mind, and any other birds that catch my eye

friday night

was supposed to start around 9pm. mark was throwing a party and curtis and i decided to make a celebrity appearance. we wanted to arrive around 9/9:30 before the party really got started because i had to work a 12 hour shift on saturday and curtis had tons of work to do. so, we got a bit of a late start and about 9:10 i called curtis and it was decided that i would drive to the party on the condition that curtis help me dig my car out (since i hadn't driven it since monday, of course it was buried in snow).
speaking of monday, that is where this story really begins. after trying, unsuccessfully, for about 30 minutes to get my car out of its spot to go to the grocery store on sunday, i decided to try in the daylight on monday. to my delight it took only 60 minutes, a bunch of cat litter, boiling water and a stranger to get my car out -- and off to the store i went. when i got back to my parking lot, i wisely chose a new spot to park so i wouldn't get suck again.
skip ahead to friday, 9:20pm. curtis arrives and we get all the snow off my car and we're ready to go. the car was not. even with the cat litter, the 45 minutes and the stranger (who happened to be curtis this time), the car was not going anywhere.
well, our only choices at this point were to walk to curtis' and take his car (which was also not shoveled out) or not go to the party. clearly, the second was not an actual option so off to curtis' we went.
getting his car out was just as bad and we had to complain even harder because by this point he and i both were soaked from the knees and elbows down. his car moved about half way out of its spot before it got stuck in the snow and required much digging before it was freed.
jump ahead to 11:00pm. curtis and i arrive at mark's (the party was only 5 miles away - if you're paying attention you know that means it took 100 minutes to get 5 miles). the party has not yet really begun and we have our pick of the liquors or beer (or the strange red substance in a bucket by the sink which we both refused) . the place was decorated nicely by their 'token undergrad' who put up christmas lights, alcohol bottles with lights behind it and was the alleged chef of the mysterious red substance.
good times were had and i suppose we left around 2(ish).
my car has decided for me that i will not be driving again until the snow melts.
the moral of this story: avoid living through a syracuse winter at all possible costs. if you must do it, do it with 4-wheel drive and snow tires.
